Writing Consultations and Editing Work

In 2021, I began collaborating with GEEX (the Glass Education Exchange) on the GEEX Writing Center. The Writing Center supports writing and scholarship for glass learners and educators by using a model similar to community writing centers. As a facilitator, I offer 40 minute 1:1 consultations on a variety of different types of arts writing, including artists statements, grant applications, bios, and exhibition texts. These one-time sessions focus on single pieces of writing, and offer general feedback on clarity of ideas, structure, style, and voice, with minor copy-edits suggesting alternative approaches/wording where applicable.

If you are looking for support beyond those one-time sessions, I also offer longer-term, multi-session writing consultation and editing services. With over 10 years experience in arts writing and editing and three years experience teaching writing intensive art history courses at the college level, my goal is to provide sustainable support for shaping your writing, from statements and bios to applications or exhibition texts. I specialize in enhancing the clarity of text while tailoring pieces to various audiences and contexts without compromising the integrity of the author’s voice.

If you are looking for support on academic writing or application essays outside of the arts, I also work with private tutor Ryan McElhaney, an expert in college admissions across disciplines.

Testimonials

“Ana Matisse read my writing ahead of time and gave me helpful feedback that was tailored to the particular opportunity for which I was applying.”

“Ana offered AMAZING feedback and suggestions and really helped put my writing into perspective for my overall writing goals. The communication was clear and extremely informative. I made more progress on my statement in the evening after our consultation than the 3 cumulative days prior to submitting my materials for our consultation. Ana gave so much feedback and support that I was able to immediately integrate that positive momentum into my statements.”

“Ana was very helpful with editing the structure and content of my artist statement. This is my second session with Ana on my artist statement and I am feeling a lot more confident with my writing than before we met. They also helped me tailor this statement for the opportunity I’m applying for.”
